Reasons TO Wearing Your Baby

Heart brain connection

There are many wonderful reasons to wear your baby. One of the most profound is the heart-brain connection. It can be a firm foundation for the healthy development of the bodily senses, such as touch, movement and balance. Research has shown that the infant must have continued reinforcement of its own heart from the mother's heart.

The influence of the mother's electromagnetic field, as well as her heart's sound waves and other heart signals are crucial to the infant's development.Research shows that when the infant and mother are close to each other, their heart-brain frequencies are synchronized.(1)
Neuroscience has now confirmed that the heart has not just muscle cells but neuro cells as in the brain. This is our emotional brain.
The combined research of two or three fields is finding that the heart is the major center of intelligence in humans. Molecular biologists have discovered that the heart is the body's most important endocrine gland.(2)

Sling babies cry less

Have you ever noticed that your baby stops crying as soon as you pick her up? Parents of fussy babies who use a sling say that their babies forget to fuss.

In 1986, a team of pediatricians in Montreal reported on a study of ninety-nine mother-infant pairs. The first group of parents were provided with a baby carrier and assigned to carry their babies for at least three extra hours a day. They were encouraged to carry their infants throughout the day, regardless of the state of the infant, not just in response to crying or fussing. In the control, or noncarried group, parents were not given any specific instructions about carrying. After six weeks, the infants who received supplemental carrying cried and fussed 43 percent less than the noncarried group.(3)

In many other cultures where babywearing is the norm, infants cry much less. They are in the arms of the mothers or another person's and put down only to sleep.

Sling babies learn more

Since sling babies spend more time in a state of quiet alertness they have the ability to learn. Research has shown that carried babies show increased visual and auditory alertness. The human face is a potent stimulator for interpersonal bonding. In the sling, the baby has a 180 degree view of what is around her. They can learn a lot even if the caregiver is busy.

Sling babies are more organized

Dr.James Sears says it is easier to understand babywearing when you think of the baby's gestation as lasting eighteen months- nine months in the mother and nine more outside the womb.By the mother and father wearing the baby, they can extend the womb experience helping to regulate the baby's systems. The more the baby gets outside help , the more easily she adapts to life outside the womb. Things that remind the baby of being in the womb can be simulated by wearing them in a sling: 1)mothers walk 2)mothers heartbeat. These rhythms have been imprinted on the baby and are now appearing outside the womb and this will calm the baby.

Breastfeeding the sling baby

Breastfeeding the baby in a sling makes life much easier for the mother, especially a baby who is going through a growth spurt. It allows the mother to be on the go and get things done around the house and at the same time meeting the infant's needs. If you are in public, it provides privacy. A mother can nurse her baby in the sling with total privacy while pushing the shopping cart at the grocery store.
Babywearing makes sibling care easier
This is especially valuable when there is a new baby and a toddler. This gives the mother one or two free hands so she can also attend to the other siblings. It allows the mother to mother both children (or more) and lessens sibling rivalry.

Baby wearing the premature infant

Because a premature baby's "womb time" is cut short, they are deprived of those final weeks or months in the womb. Now the baby must grow outside the womb. Outside wombs don't move and are static. Research has shown that premature infants whose "womb" moves will gain weight faster and has fewer episodes of apnea(periods of no breathing).
As soon the premature baby no longer needs oxygen and IV fluids, NICU are now encouraging mothers to wear their babies as much as possible, "Kangaroo Care".
