What Being a Midwife Has Taught Me

I began my training in midwifery in 1997 after being a nurse for over 13 years. The journey was not easy and still is challenging. It truly is a calling. After my first two homebirths in Austin in 1993 and 1994, I had this crazy idea that I wanted to be a midwife. Of course, life had other plans at the time, two babies only 11 months apart, purchasing land in the Texas Hill Country, and building a home a little at a time. I've been a midwife for almost 2 decades, and 98% of a successful natural labor, at home or in a facility, is being able to be in your right brain- being"in the moment"- not worrying about the future or the past.
