
Prenatal Care- approx. 10-12 visits beginning at 12 weeks
First Visit (1.5-2 hours)
- comprehensive health history and physical exam
- prenatal education
- prenatal blood tests, pap if needed
Return Visits (30-60 min)
- exams to listen to the baby's heart beat and monitor mother's well being
- prenatal education and nutritional evaluation
- birth desires and emotions discussed as you prepare for labor and parenthood
- home visit at 36-37 weeks
Labor and Birth - pre-labor/early labor: attendance and support as needed
Active labor:
- labor support by midwife as needed
- maternal assessments and baby's heart beat checked
- no 'routine" interventions
- freedom of movement, eating and drinking
- husband or labor partner offered guidance to enhance involvement, including assistance in catching the baby
- birth plan honored
Birth
- freedom of birth position,including soaking in warm water
- cutting of the cord delayed and no separation of mother and baby
- uninterrupted breast feeding as soon as mother and baby are able
- emergency equipment and medications provided as needed
Postpartum Care
Immediately postpartum
- minimum of 2-3 hours of continuous care after the birth or until mother and baby are stable
- physical exam on baby
- newborn bath, if desired
- birth linens washed and birthing area cleaned
Postpartum follow up
- Available 24 hours for concerns/questions
- Home visit at day 3 (Reassess well being of mother and baby and fill out birth certificate)
- Office visit at 2 weeks and 8 weeks
- physical exam on mother and baby
- baby weighed and checked for jaundice
- breastfeeding assistance
- education and emotional support
- newborn metabolic screen- 2 weeks postpartum
- 8 weeks postpartum after birth of baby
- gyn exam (including pap smear)
- family planning counseling
